Too bad The Roots and Method Man didn’t get this type of VIP treatment.

    esbee,
Let’s face it, The Roots got very little promotion for Game Theory. And Mef? Well he didn’t even get a video/single to start with. But I guess it’s all about business at the end of the day.

Rizoh, I know Jay has prolly been cock-blocking other artists on Def Jam because his record’s coming out, but don’t u think it’s possible that Meth and the Roots got little promo cos neither had HIT records?

If the sh-t doesn’t start poppin at radio, what’s Def Jam supposed to do? Force people to buy it? Roots needs to get on (or stay on) the road and grind it out and Meth needs to make a record with Red to generate some excitement around his music. That would be one of those “event records” Jay’s been talking about hip hop missing right now.

Riz, you know what? I’m starting to believe something is not right. I mean your boy Jay got his single aired on friggin’ MNF! Budweiser commercials too. I agree with him that hip hop needs an ‘event’ but at the expense of artists you’re supposed to market/manage?

I suppose Nas too will come out before these artists…I mean at this rate it will happen.

I wonder, is Def Jam now just pandering to mere market concerns (which I can see from a business standpoint and is what I think they’re doing considering who they’re putting out). It seems they have an agenda..they know East Coast style artists aren’t really selling as much so they cater to more mainstream popular acts?

I think somewhere we can’t just all blame Jay, I mean no one’s mentioning LA Reid..who is also the guy responsible for bringing Jay along. This will def put Def Jam in the major spotlight again..

True, true. That’s why I said it’s all about business, ’cause Def Jam won’t pump money into an album that’s not necessarily going to recoup.

But what’s really a “hit record” in this time and age? Meth had at least one or two single-worthy joints on that album and I’m sure if radio and tv played those long enough, people will start digging them as hits. Isn’t that what it’s all about? Hear it well enough and you start loving it. Yung Joc’s “It’s Going Down” is a perfect example. Song is shitty as hell, and I don’t understand how folks can move to that shit. Then again, it gets one gazillion spins and next thing you know, the lyrics are etched in your brain.

@aye yo: YouTube is fucked up like that. I guess Def Jam doesn’t want people watching their shit even though BET has been showing it all day. But trust me, you’re not missing much.

Which songs on Meth’s album were as catchy as Yung Joc’s hit? I will go back and listen again but what I recall from playing his album was that it all sounded kind of tired “All Out” and the track sampling Lauryn being notable exceptions and neither of those are really hit radio records.

Sad to say but kids today don’t give a f-ck about no Method Man and medicocre, subpar album and his bitter attitude don’t help. Joc is that new ish: young, fly, flashy. The Young Jeezy trapstar type that you can take home to meet your mom and songs 5 year olds can sing along to. Sad to say but that’s what it is now. Welcome to the rap game in 2006.

^”All Out” could have been a hit. A couple of others. I don’t think every potential smash has to be on some “Going Dowwwwn” shit. Variety is still a valuable element in the rap game.

I agree with you on Meth’s whining not helping out at all. Too bad Black Thought has joined the bandwagon.
