It just dawned on you, right? Despite all the gripe, Def Jam is still the most powerful hip-hop label around. Hov’s album will be ready to join the turkey and mashed potatoes in your shopping cart around Thanksgiving. Jeezy’s album before the album, I Am The Street Dream, hits the streets a week before that. Then comes the album proper, same Tuesday as Ghost’s straigh-outta-nowhere sequel to Fishscale, More Fish. It gets better. Three PR machines are hard at work to help Esco stay ahead of the in-house competition. In short, here’s how L.A. Reid and The Carter Administration plan on making sure that no other label sells this quarter:

Def Jam Release Schedule (Fourth Quarter)

  • Jay-Z – Kingdom Come – November 21
  • Young Jeezy – The Inspiration: Thug Motivation 102 – December 12
  • Ghostface Killah – More Fish – December 12
  • Bobby Valentino – Special Occasion – December 12
  • DJ Clue – The Professional Part 3 – December 19
  • NaS – Hip-Hop Is Dead? – December 19
  • Fabolous – From Nothin’ to Somethin’ – December 26

Anyone can say what they want about “The Roots” Buddens, etc…this is a business and DJ is still the winningnest label out there. I don’t think even Game can withstand the rush. The anticipation for most of those albums on there is insane..esp. with Jay and Nas..then Ghost? These dudes have the ears of mainstream, underground and middle ground all at once.

Ghost’s album isn’t going to move numbers, it’ll get downloads but with some of those releases are mainstream monsters, espically Jay and of course the new Nas will stir interest. Def Jam, though I question their motives, still has the idealogy of record label dominance. It’s just too bad that they couldn’t of given The Roots and Meth a better chance to be heard.

^^Yeah, they could have done better with the promotion, but let’s not pretend that The Roots are big sellers.

Game Theory was a solid album, it did get some attention, needed a bit more though to be honest.

Method Man seriously needed a single and a video..thats just disrespectful

Ghostface’s shit was 4/5 or maybe even 4.5/5 good, and he got plenty of radio spins with “Get Your Man Back Like That” and even “The Champ”, I was suprised he didnt sell well.

Be to honest, I didnt cop any of those three albums, but I was flat broke at the time ;P and I barely listened to Mef’s shit

@ Frankster: Meth didn’t help his situation by airing his grieviances out in public. I do understand he was frustrated but he could’ve easily put together a mixtape with a DJ Drama or someone of that caliber to get his name out there and folk interested in copping the new album…he should’ve hustled harder and not waited on DJ to do everything…
