I am not trying to be the white man that complains about how he is wrongfully portrayed, because I would quickly tell that white man to fuck off. And I haven’t heard this dude’s lecture, which is probably far more profound than this article. So i guess i’ll just say i have a problem with the article. first of all, instead of saying that hip hop can have a political message and cite examples from kanye and jada, why not say that neither source is really who we should be looking to for political commentary in the first place? I don’t like hip hop for any of the reasons listed by any of these people. I guess i am a white kid, but i don’t like it because it hits me personally, because i wouldn’t fool myself into thinking that selling a little weed and getting into some trouble puts me on the same page as Biggie or Raekwon or something. It is hip hop’s pure conviction that hits me, and any human can understand the articulation of basic struggle. And beautiful music is my shit, and the best hip-hop is lightyears a way from any other genre making music right now. Sorry for the length but I thought that article was bullshit and that is why. Shit, give me a microphone and I will talk for 8 hours about how important and beautiful hip-hop is, but I won’t say shit about “why white kids love it” because i think that oversimplifies music itself and insults hip-hop. get at me.

You raise a good point. You also raise a red flag when you vaguely allude to “selling a little weed…”

the fact of the matter is I wasn’t speaking about myself, i do not sell weed and any trouble I’ve been in is about as boring as it gets… perhaps the context was unclear. But what is a red flag exactly? as in you can’t post this on the site?

Nah, you can say whatever you want on the site. I wasn’t sure if you were basking in the glory of selling weed or referring to Raekwon and Big. So, yeah it was unclear.

Mike, I didn’t get what you’re upset about, about the article. In fact I believe you and the article are on the same page as far as having a genuine reason why you love hip hop MUSIC…you may have an issue with the title but like you said you haven’t heard the man speak just yet…personally I’d have preferred, “why kids love hip hop” than singling out one race ‘cos everyone has diff reasons for listening to hip hop MUSIC.

I also thought it should’ve been noted by the speaker that Rap MUSIC is an offshoot of hip hop not the same thing. So the focus ought to be on RAP MUSIC…if it is to be about HIP HOP in general then DJ’ing, graf, b-boying, entrenpreneurship, fashion and other aspects of it ought to be part of the discussion. Hip hop is more than just rap music.
