Parts 1, 3, & 4.
I see we’re gradually becoming a race of response; Don Imus says something stupid and folks start calling for hip-hop censorship without looking at the real hole in our soul.

Part 3 is the best part–it’s where Kevin Liles calls himself God and nearly stabs a heckler with his collar bone.

And why isn’t Young Dro on this panel?

  • Purpose

It IS stupid to compare Imus to hip-hop. It is also ridiculous to examine misogyny in hip-hop without examining and recognizing the misogyny in society at large.

However, that is not to say that a discussion about these issues in hip-hop is not warranted. When people know your culture (and by culture I mean African-American) more for the fact that someone swiped a credit card through some girl’s ass in a video than all the great things we have contributed to society, there is a problem. There is less balance in the music than there needs to be.

And, people in the community should be concerned. It is not as simple as saying “it is not for them anyway…” or “they just dont understand.”

And, dont get me wrong, I love hip-hop. But just because you love something doesn’t mean you cant critique it.

All segments of Hip-Hop needs to be promoted.

There is no double standard with Don Imus and rappers. Rappers usually refer to groupies as hoes.(not saying that its right) Imus referred to female college students as hoes. There is no way you can compare the two.

P.S.Imus aimed the word at the wrong people. If he had called Superhead a ho their would be no uproar at all.

Why can’t every hip hop artist be as enlightened as Common?

When I read “Hip-Hop Townhall Meeting on Oprah,” the first thing I wondered is if Common was going to be on there.

On one hand, it’s great that I associate Common with the kind of dude who Oprah would invite on to her show. On the other hand, it’s sad that there aren’t many other hip hop artists that would be appropriate for a show like this.

I understand what all ya’ll are saying and I agree with both sides of the table.

But really what bothers me is what Russell said about hip-hop, how hip-hop did more than any other civil rights leader.

I’m sorry to all the revolutionaries that have died for civil rights for having to hear that BS statement.

Just because you bring whites, blacks, and other races together to enjoy music, does not make it as powerful as Russell portrays it to be. Whites can come to a concert to enjoy the music and as soon as they’re out the building, it’s back to the same ol’. In Korea, my 5 foot GF was being pushed and cursed at by 6 foot US soldiers that were brothers.

Russell is back on angeldust, and it’s crazy to even say that the music does not influence the youth. The poetry is to be enjoyed, but too bad there are Smack DVDs and all these other avenues where rappers big up their crimes and try to show how real they are.

It’s hard to judge, it is.

It’s a sad state to be in honestly.

You forgot to put real in “” because those faux-gangstas are anything but.

Anyhow, that was truly an off the wall statement from Russya and he had a tough time trying to defend it.

Hey, which one had Russell talking about civil rights? I’m going to get sick to my stomach if I have to listen to the whole thing.

    That’s not a metaphor.

I’m sick of listening to Russell defend the indefensible and I’m glad to see people getting past the hero worship.

But hip hop has real problems that, though they are related to problems in other social sectors, are unique in many ways and have to be addressed as such.

This is the first time I’ve seen this level of response to such concerns coming from within hip hop. I hope the opportunity is taken rather than dismissed by folks who just don’t have the courage to examine themselves on a deep level.

Off the top of the head:

    Phonte
    Nas
    Mr. Lif
    Talib Kweli
    Mos Def
    One.Be.Lo.
    Lupe Fiasco
    Rhymefest

But who I’d wanna see: Ice Cube (especially in early to mid 90′s mode).
