French designer François Girbaud took a page from his Cristal counterpart, Frederic Rouzaud, and made it known that he doesn’t want any business from hip-hoppers.

“Somewhere, the company was running too much in some direction, too much in hip-hop stuff,” Mr. Girbaud, 62, told the Transom (perhaps taking a page from the playbook of a compatriot who last year expressed disdainful befuddlement toward rappers’ loyalty to the Champagne label Cristal). He was wearing a black-collared shirt over baggy black jeans, which were adorned with a single drooping silver chain that smacked against his knee as he strode through the streamlined space. “To be just connected in the hip-hop stuff is other brand; there is people like Russell Simmons or Damon Dash or Puff Daddy or all this kind. I’m not the rap people. Sure, we introduced the baggy jeans, we introduced stonewashed and all this stuff in the 60’s or 70’s, I never target just to be ethnic. It’s stupid.” [Full Story]

What’s next? KFC and Best Buy saying they don’t want business from the hip-hop community?

So it hurts my heart to hear this crap after my kinfolks and myself supported this man’s business all these years. I just recently bought anew pair, ya dig? It’s funny how people get some cake and forget who supported em. F**k him and his bullsh*t reasoning.

All he’s saying is that this isn’t the direction he wants to go…
It’d be like if I was outraged that Abercrombie & Fitch didn’t “cater” to the hip-hop community. It’s just not their cup of tea. No biggie….

I think this one went over all y’alls heads….

I think people are misunderstanding this quote. I think what he’s trying to say is that they were starting to cater only to hip hop, and not to anyone else. “I never target just to be ethnic. It’s stupid.” All he’s trying to say is he’s not trying to sell to the hip hop culture, he wants to sell to everyone.

Ok. so, where does he say that he doesn’t want anything to do with hip hop, or, ‘disses’ them? I think Shail is correct that this quote is being misunderstood. Fall back people!

The quote is being misunderstood quite alright but the way it is framed is poor. Then again it didn’t seem like he has a good command of the english language no diss but that’s what I gleaned from when i read it.

Obviously the man is interested in world domination, not just hip hop. Someone took this quote a bit out of context in order to start something..I think we need the full article/interview in order to see what question was asked before passing judgement.

Either way I’ve never cared for girbaud jeans I always thought they were mad tacky with the huge pockets and pocket designs.

The man is saying he doesn’t want to be associated with hip-hop, how’s that out of context?

“Sure, we introduced the baggy jeans, we introduced stonewashed and all this stuff in the 60’s or 70’s, I never target just to be ethnic. It’s stupid.”

This is clearly not a compliment. And I’m not even sure a question was asked here. It appears he was giving a speech or statement or something.

He never said that he didn’t want to be associated with hip hop, he is merely saying that he never intended to solely market hip hop as that’s not who he is or what he intended for the company. He’s not saying he doesn’t want hip hop heads wearing it, he’s saying he doesn’t want just hip hop heads wearing it. And that pigeon holing yourself into specific group of people is stupid.

I got the impression of him from this article like I do from many other similar figures in society that he views the hip hop community as a second rate group to target and that’s why he said what he said.

What he was saying in short is, that he doesn’t want his rich friends to think he hangs out with us or likes us just because we think his style is so damn fly.

Saw their 10-k filling and looked mighty fine. Only 3,8 million in debt. And like Ammon Ra says ” He never said that he didn’t want to be associated with hip hop, he is merely saying that he never intended to solely market hip hop as that’s not who he is or what he intended for the company”
But if he makes more profounder statements on this subject its easy to mobilize and go an massive to the warschowksi bank and complain.

ya i don’t think he is saying he doesn’t want anything to do with the hip hop communities, just not market specifically to them. and says that “Russell Simmons or Damon Dash or Puff Daddy ” or people/companies like them are there already to do that. you could even take it to say that he means other people can do it better than him. i think it would be worse if some white/french guy was pushing stuff to the hip-hop market.
