Jena 6 Update: 1 Case Overturned

One of the five students set to stand trial in the Jena 6 case can now breathe easy.

One down, five to go.

A Louisiana appeals court yesterday overturned the aggravated-battery conviction of a black high school student who was found guilty of attacking a white classmate after a racial incident that raised tensions in their small town.

The state’s 3rd Circuit Court of Appeal ruled that Mychal Bell, 17, should not have been tried as an adult by LaSalle Parish District Attorney J. Reed Walters, and that the trial judge erred in allowing Bell to be tried as an adult on charges of aggravated second-degree battery. Under Louisiana law, teenagers can be tried as adults for certain violent crimes but not battery, the court said.

Ol’ boy Sharpton was live on the scene demanding free chips and cupcakes as always:

“This is a child. He’s been locked up in a prison for a year, and a court’s saying that he never should have been tried as an adult,” Sharpton said. “He should be compensated for that.” (Source: Wash Po)

    All I got to say is 2 wrongs don’t make a right, and 3 wrongs def. don’t make a right. The more this case gets spun and the more people that tag their struggle to this struggle the more ridiculous this whole situation seems.

    People out here is San Diego are just now hearing about this for some reason, but there are hella letters being written so I think it’s becoming a lot more well-known. And that seems to be what will get justice served.

    We just gotta keep on making our voices heard about this, until it actually is a nationwide spectacle and Middle America can see the type of bullshit that happens in their good ol’ U.S.A.

    I think the media and “the powers that be” needs to be held responsible for perpetuating these typtes of justice! #1 We need to dictate to the media what we deemed as inportant to us and our community at large. O. J., Britney, and Paris Hilton and not global news, they are entertainment. The media needs to run weekly or bi weekly segments attributed to the civil and social injustices that occur. A hotline number, email, and mailing address needs to be conveyed to the public to report these types of situations. It needs to be manditory that these reports be investigated and corresponded to affiliates world wide.
    #2. We need to begin to reprimand these judges and prosecutors. Have them dis barred and removed fromt he bench for promoting such injustice. Their pentions needs to be comphiscated and allocated to those lives who they set out to destroy. We need to make aware to anyway, that this type of injustice regardless of your position will not be tolerated!!!
