Does Hip-Hop Belong in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?

San Fransisco Chronicle‘s music critic Joel Selvin is getting all bent out of shape because two hip-hop acts were nominated for induction into next year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Selvin refused to vote for anyone this year, partly because two of the nominees, Afrika Bambaataa and Beastie Boys, “probably belong in a Hip-Hop Hall of Fame.”

The prejudiced critic also bitched about Grandmaster Flash & Furious Five’s induction, which made them the first hip-hop act to ever receive the honor. Word on the streets is that Rolling Stone boss and hip-hop groupie Jann Wenner insisted on inducting Flash and ‘em even though they didn’t receive enough votes. Obviously, Wenner was getting sick and tired of not having any hip-hop inductees.

Selvin, on the other hand, doesn’t think any hip-hop artist belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And you know what? I agree with him. We don’t need awards from white organizations to validate hip-hop. Isn’t that why you have the VH1 Hip-Hop Honors? And don’t get me started on the true originators of Rock and Roll.

Funny thing is that Selvin thinks the only deserving nominee is Madonna. I’d say the Beasties have more R&R in ‘em than Madonna so I’m venturing a guess and say HipHop is just a ‘lower artform’ in his opinion. While that’s utter crap I do agree with you that HipHop shouldn’t be all that concerned with the approval of the Hall Of Fame

As resident whitey around these parts I figured I’d drop my thoughts into the ring. I honestly think that there is a place for hip hop in the R&R HOF. Hip hop is as much rock and roll as over 50% of the Hall’s members…

In the past five years The Ronettes, Miles Davis, Buddy Guy, The O’Jays and Isaac Hayes (just to name a few) were all inducted and I’m not sure that I’d call a single one of them traditional rock and roll acts.

With that – I think that what is and has been typically considered eligible for nomination has been anything from the blues on…so I think the term Rock and Roll HOF is a bit misleading when in fact it has been proven to be the Popular Music Hall of Fame.

    Beasties – IN

    Bambaataa – IN

    and yes,

    Madonna – IN
