Featuring D.C. whiz kid Wale and Def Jam songbird Chrisette Michele.

Definitely better than “Birthday Girl,” but I don’t know if it’ll work as a single.

The hatred of “Birthday Girl” is comical to me. This track is cool but don’t get it f-cked up, this ain’t the hit they need to break out of their current cult status standing. Dudes got The Roots painted into a corner so tight, they can’t do anyhting but wither and die doing the same sh-t over and over again until they wither and die or become irrelevent like De La Soul. Truly sad….

Well, they’re certainly better at these types of songs than whatever it is they were going for on Birthday Girl. You Got Me is one of my favorite all-time Roots songs, but I know people who think it’s garbage.

Let me also add that the only problem I see here is that “Rising Up” is better suited as an album cut than a single.

Apologies for the double ‘wither and die’ use in my comment above. I think my point is still clear though, no?

I dunno man at this point I just want the Roots to keep making good music. Sadly, in order to get the major label dough rolling in they need some kind of hit. Maybe they shouldn’t be so formulaic and just make the songs they wanna make..I don’t even know why Bday girl was pulled.

^It wasn’t pulled completely. They’ll still add it to the international version.
