‘Sonic the Hamilton’ Proof of Hipster Rap’s Suckiness?

I’ve been avoiding Charles Hamilton’s Sonic the Hamilton mixtape like a leper, and after reading Xplosive’s scathing synopsis of the mixtape I’m still not interested in it.

Peep game:

The conclusion I’ve drawn after listening to Sonic the Hamilton is that the hipster rap movement is nothing more than recycling of what we called backpack rap until about a month ago. The same people have traded in their backpacks and Ecko hoodies for Louis Vuitton man-purses and designer brand flannel.

Ouch! Catch more of Xplosive’s well articulated rant at Xplosive World.

I haven’t heard the tape, yet, probably won’t after reading this, seeing as ‘It’s Charles Hamilton’ is the only project I’ve liked from dude, but he hardly represents all ‘hipster’ rappers, with Wale, Mickey Factz, Naledge, etc. all being alot better. Aside from the meaningless term, Wale’s The Mixtape About Nothing shits on pretty much anything released this year.

OK. I was a fan of CH until “Death of a Mixtape Rapper” and “Then they played Dilla…”mixtapes but this one i’m not feelin it and would go so far as to say it garbage. I get dude like’s Sonic but this was way too much Sonic for me, CH has the skills to do better and this shit aint it. Maybe the “Process” is taking a toll on homie.

And don’t get me started on “Hipster Rap”

If people understood what he was doing… by wacthing some videos with him talking about the mixtape and reading his blogs. People would have a better understanding of what this mixtape is about. A lot of people just DL the Mixtape without knowing anything about him and they are like. WTF is this dude talking about?!?! Understand where the man coming from before you criticize his music.

I wasn’t even aware of Wale as a ‘hipster’ rapper. He’s just a good mc in miy book. Mixtape about nothing was dope, especially ‘Chicago Falcon’ and ‘The Kramer’. Looking forward to hearing a label release from dude, the tape he’s supposedly working on with Skyzoo has my interest too.

Do ‘The Knux’ count as hipster rap? They denounce the term but so do al hipster rappers :) . Their album had some dope songs anyway, still digging ‘Cappucino’.

Charles Hamilton keeps experimenting. What’s wrong with that? All these heads have been complaining rap is stagnant, then a new crop of kids (as evidence by the new XXL Mag cover) come out trying different styles and subject matters and people dont even want to try to scratch the surface to hear and understand them? Even when they are putting out tons of free, if unpolished, music? If that’s the case, these heads deserve the same shitty music they’ve been getting forced on them from the radio.

Blasphemy to put Wale and hipster in the same sentence dude is just a dope rapper period. Also i think it’s a problem if i gotta read your fucking blog and watch videos to understand a fucking mixtape the music is suppose to speak for it self it’s bogus to use that as an excuse for this mixtape being wack and if we saying he’s experimenting then this one was a failure.

Also The Knux are super hipster rappers and semi-gay in appearance.

“If people understood what he was doing…”

    @ASD,
R u serious? The music should speak for itself.

Alot of ppl just arent feelin this cat and its not cause hes so different and touching on so much new shit that we dont get it. Its just cause we dont like his sound/lyrics/ and or flow…period.

I listened to all his mixtapes and I’m just not a fan. The majority of his music has zero replay value.

I had a laugh with a friend who told me Charles said he wanted ppl who listen to Radiohead to dig his music. He needs to focus on a different fan base cause the ppl (like myself) who love Radiohead love em cause we can listen to the majority of their tracks a hundred plus times and still wanna hear them again. I dont see Charles ever making a song anyone wants to hear 100 times.

Only track I heard from duke was with the Microsoft tone beat, it was fresh, the rhymes was coo but nothing wild about it and I think that’s the overall picture of dude too. It’s seems like most of the new jacks that come out are not really trying hard because they think they don’t have too.
