What Mos Def’s last 2 albums did to listeners

Tom Minogue of the Collegiate Times supposedly heard Most Def’s eagerly awaited 4th solo album, The Ecstatic (due May 19). Lucky bastard! His review is adorned with all kinds of hyperbole, which indicates that he was jumping up and down ecstatically as he wrote it. In a nut shell, he describes The Ecstatic as “an easy-to-absorb, excellent-to-listen-to venture of the orchestrated word” and a sign that hip-hop is “is alive and kicking.” Of course, if any of this is true it calls for a bottle of Ace of Spades. Because let’s face it, if Dante Smith can’t make a decent album then hip-hop might as well be in the crater. Here’s Minogue’s glowing review of The Ecstatic.

How did he listen to an album that’s release date is 3 months away? I call Shenanigans.

Advance copies maybe? I get them all the time, but rarely 4 months ahead of time unless it’s for print review (print lead time is anywhere from 1 – 3 months). I have hard copies of 2 albums that are slated to drop in 2 months. Still, they must have some powerful strings over at Collegiate Times.

XXL reviewed Padded Room back in ’08, so I’m not too surprised.

Which label is the Mighty Mos currently on?

“Meanwhile, his recording output has included two muddled, half-hearted albums: The New Danger (2004) and True Magic (2006).”

and here I thought New Danger was the shit…
