Jermaine Dupri’s side project, Ocean’s 7, released its debut mixtape last week. The crew consists of JD, Nelly, Usher, Johnta Austin, B.Cox, Trey Songz, and since Bow Wow simply refuses to be seen in a monkey suit, JD tapped his personal assistant, Tyrone Davis, as the 7th member. Sounds like a group of distinguished sangas on paper, right? Well, proceed to see what the TRU Brain Trust had to say about the Ocean’s 7 mixtape.
Nahshon: “The Ocean’s 7 mixtape is the recorded version of a JD wet dream. A R&B dominated mixtape is an interesting idea but not enough to carry a mixtape for too long so its a good thing it was this short. The lesser known guys held it down the most lyrically including a Rick Ross diss! What exactly did Jermaine do on this tape? He’s a producer but he borrowed popular beats??? I’m confused as to the point except to let us to know that he’s friends with a few talented guys.” (6.5/10)
Andrew: “JD’s been saving some of his good beats for himself. I hope these guys had fun acting like the Rat Pack on this project and their Danny Ocean vibe inspires some creativity on the next tape.” (6/10)
Rizoh: “A safe alternative to sleeping pills. Maybe they’re just doing the Sarah Palin thing – set the bar so low that if they get through an entire album without an obvious doo-doo JD could declare the effort a success.” (4.5/10)
Joe Andriulli: “The original rat pack was a group of friends who made timeless music, not trey songz rapping while JD screams.” (5/10)
Overall Rating: 5.5/10
