I had the pleasure of seeing Mighty Mos Def and Jay Electronica rock Houston’s House of Blues on Wednesday night. Jay’s set comprised of mostly a cappellas (probably to underline his lyricism) and freestyles (to accentuate his versatility). Mos performed all but 3 songs from his latest disc, The Ecstatic. Aside from a few crazy moments, the show was drama-free. Here’s my photo recap of the evening’s proceedings.

Jay Electronica takes the stage at 9:50.

A fight breaks out before Jay spits his first lyrics.

He extends a hand to the dueling fellas and urges positive energy.

The show goes on

This lady hops on stage and throws herself at Jay’s feet, then gets up and starts dancing

dsc_0107
Jay alludes to the possibility that she might be cracked out, then apologizes

She grabs the mic and takes over the show for a split second

Jay brings Bun B onstage — crowd goes monkey nuts

Bun kicks a verse from “Uptown” then chunks the deuce

jaydef-15
He also chunks something else – his hat

Jay wraps it up

It’s 11:15 and your drummer for tonight is … Mos Def

jaydef-24
Mos kicks off the show with “Supermagic,” the first song on his new LP, Ecstatic

jaydef-32
He gives the crowd as heartfelt a show as you could ask for from a seasoned MC

jaydef-26
Mos hops back on the drums for a raucous rendition of “Quiet Dog”

Around 11:48, bras and panties come flying on stage

jaydef-28
He plays a few tracks from Tru3 Magic and New Danger

jaydef-29
But it’s the Black Star cuts (“Definition” and “Respiration”) that get the loudest approval

jaydef-27
At 12:50 Mos concludes the set with 3 of his biggest hits: “Ms. Fat Booty,” “Umi Says,” & “Travelin’ Man”

It was one of those “can’t miss” events. I almost missed out because of issues with photo passes and whatnot but I’m glad Live Nation came through at the last minute.
