BlakRoc – Ain’t Nothin’ Like You (Hoochie Coo) [mp3]

I was just about ready to wrap this year up and throw it in the bag when I remembered that there are still a couple more potentially solid albums on the horizon. The self-titled BlakRoc album, due out Nov. 27, is one such album. The lead single, “Ain’t Nothin’ Like You (Hoochie Coo),” has Mos Def singing and Jim Jones spitting rhymes so emo you’d swear they were ghostwrittern by Joe Budden. I never thought I’d see a Jim Jones x Mos Def collaboration. Well, not only is that odd pairing a reality, the song itself is bonkers. The album also sports collaborations with RZA, Raekwon, MOP’s Billy Danze, Pharoahe Monch, Q-Tip, and ODB.

^True. It’s not exactly their first album either, though it is the first under this name and their first foray into HipHop. Apparently Damon Dash became such a fan of the Black Keys’ bluesy rock he kept wondering what it would sound like if they dropped some soundscapes for some of his favourite emcees. He decided to create a new indie label for it and thus the BlakRoc project was born. The Black Keys on the tunes, several emcees on the mic. I’m definitely looking forward to this!

Damn. I can’t stand Jim Jones but this song is tough. I’m so conflicted.
