There’s something about heist films that always reels audiences in. Everything from the elaborate plans and fast pacing to unexpected twists and turns of loyalties gives us a rush. Typically, the characters are on a mission to execute one big job that will make them zillionaires forever. Their getaway plan often includes retirement and a move to the Caribbean Island. This adds an element of suspense, as we sit on the edges of our seats wondering if they’ll succeed on their quest or meet their tragic death in the process.
After seeing the Takers trailer, I started thinking of some of my favorite organized crime films. There have been some brilliant heist movies in the last decade (Ocean’s Eleven, Inside Man, and The Bank Job come to mind), but in case you’re looking for some oldie goodies, we offer up these 7 classics from the 1990s. Grab a bowl of popcorn, and wind up the work week with one of these heist flicks.
Quick Change (1990)
Some clown named Bill Murray decides to rob a bank in broad day light but getting out of New York proves to be a nightmare.
Ronin (1998)
Ronin chronicles the journey of an erstwhile US intelligence agent who’s trying to track down a mysterious package. A cake walk for the specialist and his team, right? Well, not if the Irish mafia and the Russians are trying to retrieve the same package.
The Usual Suspects (1995)
After a boat has been destroyed, and the criminals are dead, the key to this mystery lies with the only survivor and his convoluted story.
Killing Zoe (1992):
Zed has only just arrived in Paris, gets his romp on with a hooker. He teams up with some dangerous friends to rob a bank the following day. One big surprise awaits Zed and friends. This one boasts some intriguing twists and turns.
Bottle Rocket (1996)
Despite its commercial failure, Bottle Rocket received the endorsement of veteran director Martin Scorsese who named it as one of his Top 10 movies of the 90s. It’s a quirky heist film, but a must-see for its comical value.
Heat(1995)
This remake of 1989′s L.A. Takedown focuses on the lives of two men on opposite sides of the law – one a detective; the other a thief. It’s an exciting thrill ride devoid of the cliched comic-book style of good vs. evil battle it out.
Reservoir Dogs(1992)
Tarantino turns the heist sub-genre on its head by devoting a big chunk of the picture on the aftermath of a bank job without showing the actual robbery. Bonus points for introducing the characters in a non-linear format.
