There’s no bigger F-U to the industry than when “golden age” rappers come back rhyming like it’s 93 all over again. Problem with that approach is that half the time it sounds dated. Unless you’re creative enough to reenact your brilliance without sounding like you’re trapped in a time machine. Case in point: Souls of Mischief’s first album in 9 years, Montezuma’s Revenge (in stores now). I commend the Oakland collective for finding a way to stay relevant that doesn’t involve contrived feuds or other corny gimmicks that have become the order of the day.
