She looks like a rock star, croons like a songbird, writes like a poet, and rhymes like a rap vet. Meet Dessa Darling, Minnesota’s newest hip-hop wunderkind. She started off in the world of spoken word. As is often the case with spoken word acts, she also found a way to nurture her love for poetry and rapping. She has a unique way of seamlessly merging various art forms without losing her identity in the shuffle. It’s hard not to root for Dessa when she’s oozing charismatic charm on the mic: “And for everyone talking about my tits, I guess it’s because you can’t find shit to diss about the way that I’m spittin’.” Must be something in that Minnesota water.
Her debut LP, A Badly Broken Code is available via Doomtree.
