You say, “Happy Birthday, Dilla was just three days ago.” I say, there’s no such thing as too much J Dilla. OK, maybe there is. That Dilla vs Blueprint mashup, for instance. But I digress.
Anyway, I wanted to bring your attention to this brilliant mix, built entirely from slyly refurbished remains of Jaylib’s 2003 masterwork, Champion Sound.
The story goes that Dilla and Madlib had just wrapped up Champion Sound, which they recorded remotely with Dilla then still in Detroit and Madlib working out of Los Angeles. J Rocc, who would later become Jaylib’s deejaying 3rd member (a la JMJ and Run-DMC), compiled this mixtape of Dilla, Madlib and Jaylib songs, essentially telling the story of this group through music.
Stones Throw had some promo copies of the mixtape floating around for a while in 2003. They later took the Jaylib section, pressed it on a 45, and released as the bonus 45 with Champion Sound. Both the CD and 45 are now out of stock.
If you missed out on all this back in the day, you can still enjoy the 30-minute mix below, thanks to the folks at Stones Throw. It’s the perfect soundtrack to mark the 4th anniversary of Dilla’s death.
