While Plastic Beach won’t woo any new fans to Damon Albarns’ cartoon crew, it further affirms the Gorillaz’s place as one of the most unique bands ever. Albarn, still the musical mad scientist that he is, plays an even larger role on Gorillaz’s third studio album. Albarn writes, sings and produces the bulk of the album. Plastic Beach continues the band’s tradition of drawing on a diverse array of contributors, a lineup which includes Snoop Dogg, Mos Def, and Bobby Womack. The sonic styling leaps from one genre to another without ever breaking continuity. It’s funny how something that started off as a side gig has blossomed into a thoroughly enjoyable ride. Albarn should consider making Gorillaz a full time gig.
