India Arie isn’t feeling Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” video and she’s not biting her tongue on this one. India alleges that that the pop stars have gone too far with their depiction of sexuality in the video. She threw a thorough bitchfest on Twitter in protest of the video, which she called “socially irresponsible.”

Says India Arie:

“Am I the only one who thinks the “telephone” video is going a bit too far?

I’m not referring to the abstract nature of the video … I’m talking about the IMAGERY – the unspoken back story, the language the message

I agree gaga is being her image .. I dig her creative mind But still … Thers a such thing as socially irresponsible… I’m just sayin. Its not long before somebody does a straight NAKED video. Not like Alanis morrisette “thank you india” like NAKED dancing around.”

Socially whaaa? Everyone knows that Gaga is a gift from the music gods. Pop music was boring before she came in and rejuvenated the game. Not to mention that she’s one of a handful of artists who actually makes the effort to inject creativity into her live shows, even if it’s part of the whole risque shtick.

OK, I get it. Arie is upset that her regular girl steez isn’t poppin’ right now in comparison to Gaga and Beyonce’s sexually charged image. Why do we have to choose between the two? I enjoy Arie’s soulful crooning as much as I enjoy Bey’s bootylicious pop. Besides, Gaga already tried the whole average girl thing and failed miserably.

Here’s the much maligned “Telephone” video.

  5. Socially irresponsible? ’cause she uses her body as a tool? At least she obviously chooses to do it herself and does it in a manner remaining powerful in stead of simply being objectified.

If India Arie thinks female nudity in music videos is socially irresponsible than there’s still a truckload of videos that have been out there for years more deserving of that stamp. Ever watched a G-Unit video India?

  9. She didn’t say anything about choosing between her ish and Gaga’s, she’s criticizing Gaga going almost naked in her video.

It’s a reach to say she’s jealous, the kind of people who buy Arie’s music aren’t the kind of people who scream over Gaga.

She’s got a point too. Gaga’s entertaining, but where does it stop? I never thought I’d be one of these people, maybe I’m getting too old, but there’s little kids watching this stuff. She’s in videos wearing nothing but a plastic sheet with tape over her nipples, and everyone’s just dancing around like there’s no consequences to this. Aren’t there?

  11. anyone remember madonna? new age new face same shit, india arie can get over it and continue to do what she does, two different audiences and frankly, if she wants to step up and criticize, her thoughts are long overdue and mis directed, has she seen any rap video lately i mean really?!

  13. “It’s a reach to say she’s jealous, the kind of people who buy Arie’s music aren’t the kind of people who scream over Gaga.”

I’m actually a fan of both artists and was surprised by India’s seemingly irrational commentary.

“Gaga’s entertaining, but where does it stop?”

Wherever Gaga wants it to stop, which is the point. Everything she touches is hers. Her image, her music, her videos, everything is under her control and supervision. Nobody is doing anything to her and she’s doing everything for herself. Aside from Beyonce I think she’s the only woman in the music industry that has that going for her.

“She’s in videos wearing nothing but a plastic sheet with tape over her nipples, and everyone’s just dancing around like there’s no consequences to this. Aren’t there?”

No, there isn’t, because it’s a goddamn music video, and if your children are young enough not to recognize the difference but they’re watching the video guess what, you’re a failure as a parent.

  15. India Arie are you serious? Every rap video has naked women. Day time television have half naked men and women. Lady Gaga isn’t afraid to go the distance. Did she not understand the meaning of telephone anyways… The message was directing towards pop culture, how it is today. At least one of the messages was.
What about Madonna, Cher, David Bowie, Culture Club? The only reason I think she didn’t like it was of the butt, poisioning and same sex kissing. Because other than that nothing was wrong with it.
