One cursory glance at this month’s hip-hop release schedule and you’ll wonder who’s crazier: Def Jam for treating Redman as if he’s past his expiration date (no buzz whatsoever on his new album??) or the Wu triumvirate of Rae, Meth, and Ghost for making a Wu-Tang album sans RZA. Either way, the fan in me is looking forward to both albums merely out of curiosity. Peep my Top 10 new hip-hop releases to check for this month. Feel free to add to the list.

Gorillaz is really not hip hop, even if Mos Def, De La Soul and Snoop are featured on it. And the album is really garbage… The worst of the 3 Gorillaz albums…

@oliv: Gorillaz not HipHop? Not exclusively no, but Gorillaz is lot more hipHop than most HipHop nowadays.

    Think about that.

@ J To The AAP : Did you really heard Plastic Beach ? Because this album is perhaps 5% or 10% hip hop, contrary to their first two releases (Gorillaz, Demon Days). This new album is just 80′s minimalist “hip pop” electronica stuff. No outside producers such as Danger Mouse or Dan The Automator. Snoop Dogg contribution is just ridiculous, and the other rap guests are not so good on ugly instrumentals. Now that Gorillaz brand is installed, with two great albums, it’s good to say that it’s huge. I’m sorry but i’m upset about the fact Albarn is really open minded musically speaking, and produce this kind of shit. It’s not because they put the album on streaming few days before the release date that Plastic Beach is a monster. More hip hop than most of hip hop nowadays ? Try to listen music apart MTV or mainstream radios…

@oliv: I apologize if I came across as condescending, that wasn’t my intention. Your comment “Try to listen music apart MTV or mainstream radios” seems a wee bit misplaced.

As for Gorillaz, we obviously have a difference of opinion on the album (I actually like it) but i wasn’t talking about the amount rap guests or boombap on there. I meant the approach to making music Damon Albarn has, which is a lot more similair to the approach HipHop artists held in the 80s and early 90s than most HipHop artists have now.

By the way, “80’s minimalist “hip pop” electronica stuff” could be used to describe a lot of early rap like Afrika Bambataa as well, although I’d use it in a less dissaproving tone.

I apologize too, my goal is not to criticize the ones who like this album, art is subjective. But i don’t think albarn’s approach to make music similar to hip hop artists. I listened several times the album, i really appreciated the first two Gorillaz albums, but this one is less hip hop than these albums. For me, even if Rizoh or over bloggers/journalists consider this album as an hip hop one, i still have doubts about it. Rappers don’t spit on this one, instrumentals are not really hip hop. Back in the days, Afrika Bambataa’s music was electronica too, but not as minimalist and uninspired like this.

@oliv: Wow, people respectfully disagreeing and apologizing in a comment section? Be careful dude, we might break the internet!
