If Nas picked beats as well as he raps, he’d be an unparalleled force in music. Given his track record with beat selection, I had some reservations about the genre-merging Distant Relatives. Specifically, I wasn’t sure how he’d hold up in Damian Marley territory. “Land of Promise” is Damian Marley territory and it nullified those doubts. While it’s not his best performance of the three leaked cuts, Nas sounds as comfortable here as he did on “As We Enter” and “Strong Will Continue.” Good to see an appropriately titled song for a change.
