This is the Strangest Thing I’ve Ever Seen

As if it wasn’t devastating enough that Guru’s family just lost a soul, his so-called music partner decides to add insult to injury by releasing a phony letter which we’re supposed to believe Guru wrote on his death bed.

I, Guru, am writing this letter to my fans, friends and loved ones around the world. I have had a long battle with cancer and have succumbed to the disease. I have suffered with this illness for over a year. I have exhausted all medical options.

I have a non-profit organization called Each One Counts dedicated to carrying on my charitable work on behalf of abused and disadvantaged children from around the world and also to educate and research a cure for this terrible disease that took my life. I write this with tears in my eyes, not of sorrow but of joy for what a wonderful life I have enjoyed and how many great people I have had the pleasure of meeting.

My loyal best friend, partner and brother, Solar, has been at my side through it all and has been made my health proxy by myself on all matters relating to myself. He has been with me by my side on my many hospital stays, operations, doctors visits and stayed with me at my home and cared for me when I could not care for myself. Solar and his family is my family and I love them dearly and I expect my family, friends, and fans to respect that, regardless to anybody’s feelings on the matter. It is my wish that counts. This being said I am survived by the love of my life, my sun KC, who I trust will be looked after by Solar and his family as their own. Any awards or tributes should be accepted, organized approved by Solar on behalf myself and my son until he is of age to except on his own.

I do not wish my ex-DJ to have anything to do with my name likeness, events tributes etc. connected in anyway to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this. I had nothing to do with him in life for over 7 years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ. As the sole founder of GangStarr, I am very proud of what GangStarr has meant to the music world and fans. I equally am proud of my Jazzmatazz series and as the father of Hip-Hop/Jazz. I am most proud of my leadership and pioneering efforts on Jazzmatazz 4 for reinvigorating the Hip-Hop/Jazz genre in a time when music quality has reached an all time low. Solar and I have toured in places that I have never been before with GangStarr or Jazzmatatazz and we gained a reputation for being the best on the planet at Hip-Hop/Jazz, as well as the biggest and most influential Hip-Hop/Jazz record with Jazzmatazz 4 of the decade to now. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time. And we as a team were not afraid to push the envelope. To me this is what true artists do! As men of honor we stood tall in the face of small mindedness, greed, and ignorance. As we fought for music and integrity at the cost of not earning millions and for this I will always be happy and proud, and would like to thank the million fans who have seen us perform over the years from all over the world. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time and is my most creative and experimental to date. I hope that our music will receive the attention it deserves as it is some of the best work I have done and represents some of the best years of my life. [Via Allhiphop]

If that reads like the words of a dying man to you, slap yourself and read it again.

  1. I started reading that thinking, well who am I to judge it might really be Guru. But by the end of the letter I am pissed the fuck off. Im sorry but that is not Guru. Any doubts Ive had of Solar’s guilt are pretty much gone. R.I.P. Guru, im not focusing on this bullshit im focusing on celebrating his life right now.

  3. Anyone even semi-familiar with the Guru/Solar/Premier shit that has been going down lately should be able to see that its a bullshit letter. But legitimate sources are still quoting it without verification, including MTV, Pitchfork and those dummies at 2 Dope Boyz. Hopefully the truth comes out and those sites issue apologies for spreading it.

  9. Man, if that’s fake, then I guess inserting the line ‘With friedns like these…”

I hope to God that such a trailblazer such as Guru doesn’t have his legacy dragged through any proverbial mud. I will miss you, Guru. You were my favorite of all time, and I will never be able to thank you for all the wonderful direction you’ve given hip hop. See you above the clouds.

  11. Word, I’m supposed to forget all of the work the Guru and Preemo did and take in all the shitty music he and solar did because he said so? No way in hell would a dying man want you to forget ANY positive part of his legacy! I can say that with certainty, even thought I’ve never been a dying man. The letter’s BS. “Believe Dat” (Gang Star Single 1989 pre No More Mister Nice Guy)

  13. Man, I read that earlier and had seriiiious doubts. No one has tried to prosper on the death of a love one this fast since Joe Jackson.

  17. It reeks of suspicion. I urge the TRU investigation unit to dig deep if possible to the source of the matter. I’d love to hear Justin’s (Guru’s nephew) side of the story.

Btw, we need to find out/inquire who is this Solar cat really? Where did he come from? Who knew him growing up? Its like all of a sudden Gangstarr splits and then he conveniently shows up and becomes the heir-apparent to Guru’s legacy? Theheck?

  19. I read this shit and had to get up and walk away from the computer…. how fuckin disgusting can some dude be to try and exploit a legend’s death so quickly.

Prayers go out to Guru’s real family, and we should focus on making today a celebration of his life, and his contribution to hip hop. R.I.P. Guru

  21. The word “Solar” appears in this fabrication 8 times, while “GangStarr” appears 3 times.

What other proof do you need?

I’ve ignored Solar as an artist. Now I’m going to go out of my way to sh#t on dude.

And really – who writes a deathbed piece with exclamation points??

  23. The only positive spin I can come with is that maybe some listeners of the internets age who may not be familar with Gang Starr’s catalog finally check it out because they read about this golden age soap opera story.

Because everything else about this unfortunate…

  25. That letter was not from Guru. He called DJ Premier “my ex-DJ” WTF, he couldn’t even use his name. I don’t think Guru would do that even if him and Premier were not cool with each other. They made magic together. That’s effed up, this dude Solar is an evil nobody, not sure why he is making this stuff up.
