Australian video scratch maestro DJ Flagrant has compiled a unique video tribute to the legendary Keith “Guru” Elam, who passed away on April 20th, 2010. With the help of Serato, DJ Flagrant has cut, scratched, sliced and diced some of GangStarr’s best music videos to create a seamless montage. This video serves as a testament to Guru’s legacy as an outstanding MC.
On a personal note, seeing that “Skillz” music video near the end evoked some pleasant memories. I couldn’t find a ride to the store when GangStarr’s final album dropped in ’03. I said to myself, “Self, there’s no way you’re going to miss out on this nugget of history. I was convinced they had broken up for good, because their interviews betrayed a subdued sense of frustration with the music business. So, I walked 31/2 miles to the store and bought a copy of The Ownerz. It’s not their best album, but it was totally worth the trek. I still can’t believe that an album with no single hi-hat sound could be so enjoyable.
Rest in power, Guru.
