I’m thoroughly enamored of Janelle Monáe’s ArchAndroid (Suites II and III of IV). I haven’t loved an album in a while, but lawd knows Monáe’s debut is something like a sugar rush. That said, I have one minor complaint. The sequencing is a gift and a curse. On one hand, she attains musical continuity by allowing each song to bleed over to the next track. It’s one of those albums you can play while doing your Saturday cleaning. Having a house party? No problema. Press play, throw back, and watch DJ Monáe dictate the mood.
On the other hand, the album’s splintered structure makes it tedious to navigate. Once your ear adjusts to this initial hump, though, you’re in for a thrilling ride to Wondaland. ArchAndroid is definitely an early candidate for Album of the Year. [Amazon]
