We always hear great things about legal MP3 downloads and how it’s the music industry’s saving grace. The music business, we’re often told, is running on a gas full of digital downloads. But exactly how much do artists make from MP3 sales?

I know it’s not fashionable to sympathize with those “rich” artists and their ginormous mansions, but if you could put that sentiment aside and guess how much they make from digital downloads what would be your guess? David McCandless of Information is Beautiful has put together a series of charts that break down digital royalties in lay man’s terms. The chart is partially based on a post by The Cynical Musician and thousands of hours of research.

The figures might surprise you. Peep game.

He doesn’t claim this chart to be gospel, but it gives you an idea of digital royalty rates based on research.
