I posted the lyrics to “Ballad of the Black Gold” back in April to buttress a point about Kweli’s occasional raptivism on Revolutions Per Minute.

A month later, the song still sounds as fresh as when I first experienced it. Hit the play button to hear Kweli describe how his experience in the world’s most populous black nation inspired “Ballad of the Black Gold.” In a nutshell, he went to Nigeria in 2008 to shoot a music video for “Hostile Gospel” and came back to the States with two gems instead of one.

Dope as F*ck. I expected RPM to be a decent album but I was still pleasantly surprised by how good it actually is. Several songs blew me away and this is one of ‘em.
