It looks like Chicago rhyme slinger S-Preme has edged out his hometown hero in the race to sample the Wicked “Popular” song. This race that Kanye wasn’t aware he had signed up for.

Remember that video of Kanye toying with the Wicked “Popular” sample? S-Preme saw it, too, and did something about it. He made an entire track out of the same sample and jokingly credited Wayne Kest for the production. He also justifies cribbing Kanye’s idea by saying that he bought some Air Yeezys: “I got your shoes at the crib though.” Dude definitely has a sense of humor.
As for Preme’s take on “Popular,” it packs just enough cherries to keep you interested but offers nothing substantial. Seriously, the personification of hip-hop should be outlawed at this point. You can’t help but wonder what that sample would sound like if Ye slapped some mean drums on it. Or if he still plans on using it. Either way you look at it, this is definitely a reminder of why artists get nervous when cameras follow them into the lab.
Here’s the Wicked version of “Popular,” from the Wizard of Oz musical with Taye Diggs’ wifey Idina Menzel.
