Someone opened the gates of underground hip-hop this month. Here’s a rundown of what’s hitting your record stores and neighborhood bootleg corner in August.
I have the utmost respect for artists who use their celebrity status for good deeds. I’m even more delighted when hip-hoppers lead the charge for social change. Enter Haitian-born Fugee co-founder Wyclef Jean.
No, seriously, Kanye West doesn’t own a cellphone.
Now that’s one rapper I’d be willing to get behind. J Cole tips his hat to the elder statesman of Southern rap, just in time to celebrate Bun B’s 5-mike award for Trill OG. Put the debate aside for now and enjoy this trill ass joint.
Buck Marley mines his financial troubles for gold on “My Campaign.” Dude, it’s about time you gave us another album.
Kanye West’s “Power” video is one for the ages. Scratch that, it’s not a music video, it’s a portrait of “Power.” A moving picture of epic proportions. But how do you visually portray a portrait of power?
Aside from Missy Elliott and Kanye West, whose “Power” premiered the same night as “Love the Way You Lie,” no other hip-hop artist consistently makes music videos as memorable as Eminem’s. His latest, “Love the Way You Lie,” features Megan Fox, some dude from Lost, and Rihanna’s Kool-Aid-flavored hair.
Major props to graf artists Logek, Cope, Deem, Sen, Gusto, Meres and OD, who took the time to painstakingly immortalize the illest DJ-MC tandem of all-time. You can find this on 174th Street between Park and Webster in the Bronx. I can only imagine how long it took them to put this together.
Look out for Lil Wayne’s “Bogey Blunts” at your local 7-11 and cigar shops. If you don’t see them, request them.
If I heap any more praise on Janelle Monae’s Archandroid, you’ll think Diddy was paying me to say these things. So, I’ll just leave this video here and let Miss Monae make her case. Nah, I lied. This video is bold and beautifully stunning. The best part? It probably cost less than a chicken burrito.
While we’re still talking about The Source, here’s a fancy spread they did with Rocsi and Terrence J. Who are these people, you ask? Well, I did some research and according to Wikipedia, they’re the co-hosts of something called 106 & Park.
