The marriage between Universal and MTV.com has come undone. Details of the breakup are still sketchy, but it’s fair to say that Universal is currently in bed with Hulu knockoff Vevo for a longtime.
UMG’s affair with Vevo certainly played a hand in the split. In a statement, Universal said: “MTVN has been unwilling to negotiate a fair syndication deal with Vevo to carry our artists’ videos and consequently our videos will not be shown on their online properties. We believe that using Vevo as our online music video syndication platform is the best way to maximize revenue for our artists, our songwriters and ourselves.”
MTV will still air videos of UMG artists. [WSJ]
