2010 has seen an explosion of quality self-released albums by newcomers, from Big K.R.I.T. to Preemo. You can now add Fat Tony’s RABDARGAB to that list. Think of Tony’s debut LP as a period piece set in late 90s Houston, Texas. Look no further than the title RABDARGAB (“Read a Book, Do A Report, Get a Buck”) for evidence of Tony’s state of mind. Remember that H.I.S.D. program designed to improve literacy in Texas?
Maybe this funky little commercial will jog your memory.
RABDARGAB the program was founded on Christopher Morley’s belief that “When you sell a man a book you don’t sell him just 12 ounces of paper and ink and glue – you sell him a whole new life.” RABDARGAB the album espouses the idea that when you sell a man an ounce of weed and a 40, you sell him a whole new song. Oh, Fat Tony doesn’t smoke weed, he smokes cilantro.
Fat Tony is not a southern rapper in the true sense of the term. You won’t hear him bragging about his wood grain wheel, for instance. No candy-painted Cadillacs here; he prefers skateboards. What you’ll hear on RABDARGAB, though, is a student of the game who has a knack for making even the mundane sound profoundly exciting.
RABDARGAB arrives on Tuesday, October 19, but Fat Tony has allowed us to share his full-length debut with TRU Nation a day in advance. Enjoy.
