This is all kinds of sad.

Tommie Smith is about to sell the historic gold medal he won at the 1968 Olympic Games. Smith is also auctioning the pair of Pumas he wore during the competition.

Smith’s timing couldn’t be more depressing. October 16 marks the 42nd anniversary of the Mexico City Games which saw Smith win the gold medal for the 200 m in a world record time 19.83 s. Smith and bronze-winning teammate, John Carlos, gave a Black Power salute during the medal presentation. Silver medalist Peter Norman, arguably the most awkward white guy in a picture, wore a human rights badge in solidarity.

That gold medal, Carlso’ bronze, and what they symbolize are bigger than Smith. They don’t belong on some rich asshole’s mantle. The starting bid for the gold medal is $250,000. If I had that kind of money, I’d pay Smith to keep it.
