The Politics of Crazy

Some numbnut opened fire on Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and 17 others at a townhall meeting in Tucson, AZ, this afternoon. According to the Associated Press, she’s now in critical condition.

Six people have died so far, including a 9-year old kid and federal judge John Roll.

NPR says that the shooter ran off but was tackled by some courageous bystanders. Law enforcement identified the suspect as Jared Lee Loughner, a 22-year-old white male. The numbnut is now in custody.

This is what happens when politics becomes overly divisive. The bigotry and prejudice in political discourse has gone too far. With the undercurrent of hatred coursing through the tea party agenda, it was only a matter of time before some lunatic would take things to a dangerous level. I can only hope that this tragedy brings people together and compels both parties to tone down the negative rhetoric. My prayers go out to Congresswoman Giffords and all the victims of this horrible incident.

If this tragedy doesn’t get your blood boiling, Ashley Miller’s post on violent rhetoric should do the trick.

PS: Fuck the idiots who make it easy for lunatics to get their hands on semi-automatic weapons with a 3-day waiting period.
