In a shocking turn of events, B.o.B a.k.a. Bobby Ray a.k.a. same guy who said, “baby you the whole package plus you pay your taxes”, responded to a diss from Tyler, The Creator of the recently popular musical group, Odd Future. While the two artists couldn’t be more different stylistically, their paths crossed, or rather collided, with a single line from Tyler’s “Yonkers.” In case you’ve been under a rock, Tyler said “I’ll crash that fucking airplane that that faggot nigga Bob was in,” in reference to B.o.B’s Grammy-nominated single “Airplanes.” Although simple, the line was effective in its straightforwardness and more importantly, its explicitness. In stark contrast, B.o.B’s retaliation was over two minutes long, and it failed to directly address anyone by name.
While the song itself was not a bad one, as a “diss song,” it was terrible. First let’s take a quick look at a few of the classic disses: Nas had the “Fuck Jay-Z” sample, Hov called out Nas by name multiple times, and Biggie made his shot at Pac so clear that he didn’t even need to say his name. All of these classics have a common ingredient: blatant disrespect. They either address real facts, or make it blatantly obvious who they are talking about. In Bobby’s case, the title of the song is a direct reference to Odd Future’s name, but the lyrical content is so vague and muddled that many people are still wondering if this is an actual ‘diss’. He addresses Great White Sharks, Freaks Looking For Sausages, Pumpkins, Telescopes, and everything else BUT Tyler.
Maybe it’s unfair to compare B.o.B to some of the greatest emcees to ever breathe on a mic, or maybe we need to realize how low we’ve allowed our standards to fall.
