David Blake is disenchanted with hip-hop as we know it today. Quik’s latest effort, The Book of David, shows a man who’s comfortable in his own skin and unafraid to color outside the lines.

“I put this album together in four months,” says Quik at the listening session for Book of David. “And I did it primarily because–and you can question me on this later–I really don’t like hip-hop music anymore. I just like making music, period.”

Quik joined forces with Kurupt for 2009’s The BlaQKout. He dropped Midnight Life with the Fixxers two years before that. The Book of David is Quik’s first solo album since 2005’s Trauma.

The Book of David boasts production solely from DJ Quik. The album shows his evolution not only as a producer but as a vocalist. Expect some reflective cuts.

Quik experiments with singing a lot more than you’re used to hearing from him. On the production end, Book of David is raw and drum-heavy. It shows Quik’s evolution as an artist without coming off as cliched.
