Uzoy (pronounced Uzi) is on a short list of super duper skilled new rappers of the fairer sex. On first listen, you’ll quickly pick up on the fact that her style is more Jean Grae than Nicki Minaj. By the time you get to “Exhibit D,” her reimagination of Jay Electronica’s “Exhibit C” you’ll squint and swear you’ve heard that flow before. Uncross your eyes. You haven’t. But no, she’s not breaking new ground here. The nostalgic production on [DEF]inition hearkens to the proverbial golden era. Still, when she’s shining light on the familiar, she does so with a swift delivery.

After years of bubbling under the radar, the Houston wordsmith is now ready for blast off. But that journey has to start with a simple step. She’s been slowly drumming up buzz, garnering momentum, one sun-dried song at a time. Today, she unveiled her new full-length project The [DEF]inition in conjunction with the dope house. It’s a good first step.

  1. She’s alright, but definitely doesn’t deserve to be compared to Jean Grae – or even Nicki Minaj. It’s cos you overhyped her like that that I felt disappointed by the mixtape.

    • David, you’re a comedian. I’m sure you know what I mean by “her style is more Jean Grae than Nicki Minaj.” She’s going for straight up emceeing (Jean-style) as opposed to the ditzy pop leanings of Nicki Minaj.
