When Raekwon teamed up with Nas on Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang, hip-hop heads were expecting “Verbal Intercourse 2.0.” That’s a normal reaction. Funny thing about great MCs like Shallah Rae and Esco? They rarely crib from themselves and they live to defy expectations. While “Rich & Black” may not go down as a classic cut like “Verbal Intercourse,” it’s a strong collaboration that boldly ventures outside a proven formula. Press play to watch Rae talk about the thought process behind “Rich & Black” in this Hip-Hop Shop interview.

  1. No offense, but this interview is wrong on a half a dozen levels. First of all, NaS did a different version of Rich, Black almost two years ago called ‘I Have To':

The worst part is, the first verse is clearly better than the one they used for Rich, Black and obviously where the song title came from. Since it was recorded back then, NaS wouldn’t have even been in the studio to record it with Rae. Rae makes it sound like they got together and did this in the studio for the album, even going as far to say they brought a producer on board. That just didn’t happen. Second, the verse on Verbal Intercourse was done way earlier. I’m not sure of the official date, but the Nasy NaS mixtape dropped in 1992 according to some sources and Deja Vu was on it:

There are some differences, but it isn’t like Rae walked NaS through a new idea. The irony here is that if anyone knows the problems with leaked songs on the internet, it is NaS. Had they actually been in the studio together, maybe he cold have warned Rae.

    • You’d be surprised how many other instances of “recycled” verses exist in the game. Happens all the time. I doubt Rae even had a scintilla of a clue. Thanks for the clips.
