Covering a classic is risky business but Elzhi is simply incapable of creating complete audio feces. He’s severely underrated and an absolute beast on the mic with regards to both delivery and content. Still, being one of the top emcees in the game doesn’t grant you a free pass to tamper with one of the most beloved classics hip-hop culture has to offer. In the eyes of hip-hop fandom, Elzhi lays his nuts on the dresser on May 10th when he releases ‘ELmatic’, his interpretation of Nas’ iconic debut album, as a free download on Elzhi.com. One good omen is that he won’t simply be spitting over the instrumentals. From the press release:

Elzhi enlisted the famous Detroit ensemble Will Sessions (a six-piece band who has cultivated a reputation in the Detroit area for being able to meticulously replay Nas’ instrumentals from scratch and who produced the endeavor) and recorded the entire project with only live-instrumentation

A bit more than a week from now and you’ll be able to judge the project for yourself, but here’s a teaser in the form of leaked track “Detroit State Of Mind.”

1982 was when Jaap van der Doelen aka J.Monkey shot his way out his mom dukes. A mere two years later he was already battling Big Brother and The Illuminati. Whenever he has time to spare from those efforts he writes (about music, mostly), hosts a radio show and designs graphics for a living. He lives in The Netherlands where he continues to be winning.
