The NBA has slapped the NJ Nets and its celebrity part-owner with a $50,000 fine following Jay-Z’s presence in Kentucky’s locker room during the NCAA Tournament. The Kentucky Wildcats were in Newark, NJ to face the Tar Heels in the Final Four. The game was played at the Prudential Center, which also happens to be the Nets’ arena. After the game, minority Nets owner Jay-Z was waiting in their locker room to congratulate them.
Jay’s contact with potential draft picks on the Kentucky roster violated the NBA’s policy. You could argue that those kids were hanging out with Jay-Z the Rapper, not Jay-Z the NBA Team Owner. You could also argue that Jay was trying to charm them with celebrity status.
He didn’t even have to say anything to those kids. His sheer presence was enough to give them a whiff of his star power. As Elizabeth Taylor would say, there’s no deodorant like success.
