Record Store Day is upon us tomorrow, a day that has become quite popular at the TRU HQ. As much affinity as we have with the digital world there is little that beats a good ol’ slab of vinyl with a dope sleeve as a collector’s item for a music aficionado. Tomorrow sees the release of several Record Store Day exclusives. We’ve picked out the cream of the crop for you.
Rhymesayers picture disc 12″
A Rhymesayers 2011 sampler featuring six unreleased tracks with artwork by Chris Gliebe aka Devious printed on the vinyl itself. There’s a download card included as well so the 1000 lucky bastards who spot one of these hand numbered puppies at their local record store get to enjoy it in analog and digital format.
A SIDE: 1. ATMOSPHERE feat. Aesop Rock – WHICH WAY IS UP? Produced by Atmosphere
2. GRIEVES – GOT’S TO GO Produced by Budo
3 P.O.S. – HOG KNUCLE DEMO Produced by Mux Mool.
B SIDE: 1. BROTHER ALI – WHAT I DO TO YOU Produced by Jake One
2. BLUEPRINT feat. Zero Star – THE BARTENDERS Produced by Blueprint.
3. EVIDENCE – Can’t See The Sun Produced by Twiz The Beat Pro.
Flying Lotus – Cosmogramma Alt Takes
Flying Lotus dropped one of the greatest albums of 2010 with ‘Cosmogramma’ and created a nice extra where you could download the ‘alternative takes’ by holding the record sleeve to your webcam. Cool way to thank the fans and invoke technology but a lot of people still wanted an old school hard copy. Their wish will granted tomorrow and there’s a smart inversion of the awesome original sleeve with it too.
01. Clock Catcher (Harp Arrangement)
03. Pickled (Stripped Version feat. MatthewDavid)
04. Drips Mix 3
05. Catacombs (Extended Version)
06. Galaxy in Janaki (2008 Version)
07. Galaxy In Janaki (String Solo)
08. Archway (Teebs Remix)
Gorillaz – The Fall
‘The Fall’ is the album Damon Albarn produced on his iPad while touring the US last year. It was released for free on the Gorillaz website on Christmas day last year like they were an online Saint Nick. Demand was high enough (rightfully so, I might add) for an official release and it will be on CD and in iTunes soon. But eff that, if your gonna pay for a copy, why not get something cool and tangible in your hands? Album sleeves over cd booklets all day, every day, with Jamie Hewlett at the helm you know the artwork’ll be dope. Record Store Day is the only day you’ll be able to pick up this album on vinyl, unless you don’t mind paying through the nose on eBay a week from now.
See what’s happening in your neck of the woods on recordstoreday.com, fat chance there’s something worthwhile waiting for you when you switch off the screen and stroll to the local store like back in the day. Have a great day!
