A while ago I had the good fortune to catch Aloe Blacc live during his current tour. I can honestly say that I think I have an idea now of how it must’ve felt to be in the audience at a Motown soul show back in the day. His stage performance was reminiscent of a young Michael Jackson, back when he wasn’t a kid anymore but hadn’t yet grown into the world-conquering pop icon either. I was about to mention this associative thought to my girl (the tickets were a birthday gift to her) when dude started in on a slowed down soul ballad version of Billie Jean. He killed it, the band killed it, I enjoyed a cold beer and good company; in the words of O’Shea Jackson, it was a good day.
Go see the show if you have the chance, but you don’t even have to take my word for it. NPR is streaming his performance from May 28th at the Sasquach Music Festival, enjoy!
Sidenote: First Mayer Hawthorne’s free EP and now this concert stream from Aloe? Rappers step up, these soul guys are smashing y’all right now!
