Few things in life are more depressing than sifting through hundreds of artist submissions and finding none worth giving a dook about. Experience has taught me that the shit is almost always guaranteed to be an exercise in futility. Luckily, I won’t be needing any Xanax today–the first and only music submission I checked was worth the effort. It only took a concise email titled “New Music Submissions From Mahd” to remind me that there’s still a small crop of talent out there somewhere.
I don’t know much about Mahd, but I know that he’s from Detroit, a city associated with a bevy of hip-hop greats. His sound isn’t domineering in its Detroitness. It’s more like a fusion of various regions. It wouldn’t surprise me to find that Mahd is a journeyman a la Jay Electronica. The two cuts below perfectly capture different sides of his sound: “Crazy” has a dirty south feel; “Competition,” the superior of the two, is laced over J. Cole’s “Too Deep for the Intro.” Listen up.
