All the news about the tragedy in Norway is (understandably) drowning out other sad news; Amy Winehouse has been found dead in her apartment in north London today, becoming the latest member of the forever 27 club. The cause of death is unconfirmed as of now, but speculation runs in the predictable and tragically believable direction. Amy had a hard time dealing with the fame her debut album ‘Frank‘ brought her, which would only grown when her second album was released. Ironically, she even described how she found refuge from heartbreak in a bottle but downplayed the need for ‘Rehab‘ in her breakthrough single from her second album ‘Back to Black‘.
Amy Winehouse was a huge talent with a great voice and solid songwriting skills to boot. Sadly, her bouts with drugs and booze overshadowed her career, and dealing with the British tabloids was a burden that we can safely assume didn’t contribute to her sobering up. Hopefully she has now found the peace she wasn’t able to acquire in life. There’s little doubt that many more words will be spent on her troubled life and her inability to shake her destructive habits, and how she wound wasting her own considerable talent, but I’d rather remember her for the great two albums she did leave behind.
