MED feat. Hodgy Beats – Outta Control

MED has been a staple of the Stones Throw stable since its early days. Appearing on many releases from his brethren (like Madvillain’s Madvillainy, Madlib’s Shades of Blue, J Dilla’s The Shining, Lootpack’s Soundpieces, Quasimoto’s Unseen) with even highly acclaimed classics among them never really got him the accolades that his peers received though. His solo debut ‘Push Comes to Shove‘ remains a too often overlooked part of the Stones Throw catalogue despite his signature percussive flow and production from Madlib, Oh No, Dilla (who’s ‘Donuts‘ cover photo was a still from the set of the video for MED’s ‘Push,’ a joint he produced and became the lead single) and even Just Blaze in a seldomly seen indie move.

MED is not a flamboyant rapper. He sounds like a blue-collar type of mc not concerned with ‘swag’ or the latest hot sound. He works with producers he digs and is often close with and employs a somewhat staccato, percussive and clearly articulated flow that gets the job done every time, no frills, just beats and rhymes. He’s all set to make you notice with his next release entitled ‘CLASSIC‘ with production mainly spearheaded by Madlib and additional beats by Karriem Riggins, Oh No, Georgia Anne Muldrow and The Alchemist. MED doesn’t believe it’s hubris to call his album by the aforementioned title, he says it simply exemplifies his attitude towards making music:

I called the LP Classic because that’s the approach I took: create music that has the potential to be played by every generation. This album deals with current issues, personal and within the community. Good-feeling music will always last and allow hip-hop to grow. Even though I recorded well LP was to do the music that I love to do but at the same time show growth.

Wether the record will live up to its title or not is something you can judge for yourself November 1st. Below is the video to the title song featuring Talib Kweli.

1982 was when Jaap van der Doelen aka J.Monkey shot his way out his mom dukes. A mere two years later he was already battling Big Brother and The Illuminati. Whenever he has time to spare from those efforts he writes (about music, mostly), hosts a radio show and designs graphics for a living. He lives in The Netherlands where he continues to be winning.

  1. Dopeness! its aight, it seem like everyone who was touched by dillas grace in his camp still carryin on his almost exact sound n thats a gift n a curse

    • There’s certainly truth to that statement but I’d say the sound in this case is as much Madlib’s as it is Dilla’s.
