DOOM, Thom Yorke & Johnny Greenwood – Retarded Fren

Lex Records is celebrating it’s 10-year anniversary soon and joining the festivities are three widely respected musicians and a retarded ‘fren.’ A lurching mechanical beat drops and after what seems like a somewhat hesitated start DOOM sounds right at home with a menacing flow among the jittery noises. Don’t come expecting a joyously cartoonish Daniel Dumile, this is the ‘Born Like This’ spitter in full-on villain mode with the British indie royalty providing a perfectly dark and atmospheric backdrop. The ending feels a bit tacked-on like it’s really there to create an invite for the Lex Records celebration while the meat of the song is actually already finished, but any record label putting music like this out deserves a successful shindig.

The Verdict:

1982 was when Jaap van der Doelen aka J.Monkey shot his way out his mom dukes. A mere two years later he was already battling Big Brother and The Illuminati. Whenever he has time to spare from those efforts he writes (about music, mostly), hosts a radio show and designs graphics for a living. He lives in The Netherlands where he continues to be winning.
