Eric Coleman of Mochilla made of video of the night he and his friends paid tribute to J-1, the drummer in Dam-Funk’s band who recently passed away while they were touring in Sweden.

On Monday November 28th 2011, a heavy-hearted edition of Funkmosphere was dedicated to the life of Jovan “J-1” Coleman. Family, fans and friends gathered to hear the funk J-1 championed and collectively mourn the loss of a member of our extended musical family.

Dam-Funk paid his respects and shared his love and admiration for J throughout the night. House Shoes played an all-vinyl set and reminded everyone that J was responsible for introducing him to the mother of his child. Peanut Butter Wolf brought boxes of Master Blazter records and offered copies to everyone in attendance. Members of the Animal Kingdom, a collective J-1 aka THE DEER founded in LA, shouted out their animal names in a somber roll call. People drank Cazadores, J-1’s favorite tequila, and put all colors of smoke in the air. Coleman ( brought his camera and gave those in attendance a chance to say goodbye.

1982 was when Jaap van der Doelen aka J.Monkey shot his way out his mom dukes. A mere two years later he was already battling Big Brother and The Illuminati. Whenever he has time to spare from those efforts he writes (about music, mostly), hosts a radio show and designs graphics for a living. He lives in The Netherlands where he continues to be winning.
