The homie Ivan has just unleashed his samples of the year compilation. I know the word ‘epic’ gets thrown around to describe everyting from funny to mildly entertaining these days, but it’s fully applicable in this case.

Samples of the Year 2011

You better dust off your pagedown key, scroll button or get your swiping finger ready, merely browsing the tracklist will already take you a while. But don’t let it stop you, despite synth-heavy beats and an infatuation with 90s euro-house being more prevalent than ever in rap, 2011 seems to have been a great year for sample-based hip-hop. Sources ran from as recent as Jamie XX’s Gil Scott-Heron remix record from earlier this year and Taku Iwasaki’s jazzy videogame soundtracks to an almost forgotten gem by r&b songstress Rhetta Hughes from 1969. It’s varied, it’s dope, and it’s enough music to jam to straight into 2012.

1982 was when Jaap van der Doelen aka J.Monkey shot his way out his mom dukes. A mere two years later he was already battling Big Brother and The Illuminati. Whenever he has time to spare from those efforts he writes (about music, mostly), hosts a radio show and designs graphics for a living. He lives in The Netherlands where he continues to be winning.
