Gorillaz – Do Ya Thing (radio edit)
Gorillaz – Do Ya Thing (full 13 minute version)
As we reported last week, Converse announced the musicians involved with the project around their new line of limited edition shoes, designed by none other than Gorillaz visual mastermind Jamie Hewlett. In an interview with Pitchfork Damon Albarn and James Murphy already revealed the three collaborators hit it off fantastically during the recording of the song, so much so that they even cut an extended 13-minute take in which 3 Stacks repeatedly informs the listener of him being the proverbial shit.
It was just a story about Damon seeing somebody he knew and saying, “How’s it going?” and the guy responded, “Oh, my projects are working out great.” We all laughed because that’s literally like saying, “Oh, it’s great– I’m the shit.” So it turned into a thing. It was pretty genius. It’s just basically André riffing on that idea.
That version has now hit the web as well, courtesy of 107.7 The End, and is joyfully bonkers. Not the radio version wasn’t (“Onomatopeia” Dre? That’s winning) but this extended cut turns everything up a notch with it’s awesome build-up and mad ad-libbing. Soundtrack to the weekend y’all.
