Maureen ‘Ma Dukes’ Yancey has announced a new posthumous Dilla record called Rebirth of Detroit which features various Detroit vocalists going in over unreleased Dilla beats. Posthumous releases are always tricky business, (after all, how are you gonna slap someone’s name on a record when that artist is no longer able to sign off on it himself?) but Ma Dukes has an unblemished track record so far and seems very much in touch with her son’s musical legacy, or at least has surrounded herself with people who are.
“This will bring together artists that have drifted away from one another and haven’t been able to work with each other lately. It’s a healing process for the city. For individuals, it’s going to bring back the love and the passion for the music and for what hip-hop has to offer.”
That sounds like the perfect idea. The first track (featuring Danny Brown) is below. Rebirth of Detroit drops June 12th.
