Canibus pulls out notepad during rap battle

Last night, Canibus was set to make history. He was prepared to battle Dizaster, an emcee relatively unknown outside of the battle circuit but who earned his credentials within that scene, and as a rapper embroiled in one of rap’s most legendary beefs with his head held high, this promised to be epic. The whole set-up mimicked that of the greatest fight nights in boxing, down to the pre-fights and the pay per view availability. Similar to the boxing match held last night though, the event ended up making history in a way nobody expected, and satisfactory to few. With all the drumming-up, promising to deliver something seldomly seen, Canibus certainly did deliver on that end: “Ayo, this ain’t no regular battle.”

Yeah, I’m pretty sure a regular battle doesn’t involve one of the two parties involved pulling out a notepad to read his lines aloud to an opponent that even seems disappointed. Talk about anticlimactic. Twitter was abuzz all day, but you really have to see it to believe it. It probably would’ve been better for Canibus to just admit defeat because the man that held his ground against Todd Smith could do nothing but damage his reputation once he pulled out those notes. This probably hurts more than whatever got his arm in that sling, and be warned, to anybody that was around in the LL vs Bis era, it hurts to watch too.

There sure was a disaster here, but it related to more than just the name of Canibus his opponent.

1982 was when Jaap van der Doelen aka J.Monkey shot his way out his mom dukes. A mere two years later he was already battling Big Brother and The Illuminati. Whenever he has time to spare from those efforts he writes (about music, mostly), hosts a radio show and designs graphics for a living. He lives in The Netherlands where he continues to be winning.
