Michelle Jenneke or Why I’m Rooting for Australia at the Olympics

I’m not Australian. I didn’t know a damn thing about Aussie hurdler Michelle Jenneke prior to this video, which has been spreading like California wildfires all week. Jenneke is a 19-year-old native of New South Wales, Australia.

So, how did she go from obscurity to meme celebrity?

For one, she’s pretty. Then there’s her pre-race routine at the IAAF World Junior Championship in Barcelona. Before the whistle blows, she does a little dance, shakes her hips, and jumps up and down, all while smiling big. After the whistle blows, she completely destroys her opponents. Fantastic. She then goes around hugging and congratulating each girl. Still smiling.

Sadly, she will not be competing in London. But I’m still rooting for Australia at the Olympics. You know why? Because I’ve never seen anyone look so happy while running. That smile will get her very far in life. Applause.
